Supreme Judicial Court Selects New Administrator
October 7, 2026
The seven Supreme Judicial Court justices selected MICHAEL COELHO, a former legislative director to Gov. Mitt Romney and Executive Office of Public Safety official, to take over as administrator of the Trial Court starting Oct. 13. Coelho will succeed THOMAS AMBROSINO, who retired Sept. 18. Coelho currently works as deputy commissioner of programs in the Office of the Commissioner of Probation, a role in which he manages the Massachusetts Probation Service's involvement in the operation of specialty courts, the interstate compact unit, the substance use testing program, and reentry and sober housing placements. The Trial Court administrator works with the chief justice of the Trial Court to run the largest component of the state's judicial branch, with seven court departments, over 6,400 employees and 94 courthouses. Coelho worked three years as assistant secretary for policy and planning at EOPSS and, prior to that, was the secretariat's chief of staff. He had prior experience as legislative director for Romney.
